The Five in a Row Digital Nature Studies are not just a list of activities of things to do in each season. Rather they are an encouragement for you and your children to begin a life style of becoming more observant about each season, and noticing and learning throughout the year more about the nature around you. It is a call to begin to discover together the signals of each season drawing to a close and the signs of the next season beginning. The Five in a Row Digital Nature Studies are an attempt to inspire you to enjoy the many aspects of each season through signs of nature, music, poetry, stories, and more.
And they are studies to be used continually throughout your teaching days.
For instance, if you have young children, you would find, in the Fall Study, an easy poem or two for this fall. You could memorize the poetry so that you could recite the short poems as you walk together outdoors enjoying the signs of fall. Or you could go on a walk and then share the poems as you have a snack when you return.
Next year during this season you would pick a more difficult poem or two from the study, and so on through the years. There are plenty of quotes, poems, pieces of music, etc., that you can choose from, by level of difficulty, for years to come.
You won't want to use everything at once.
The Five in a Row Digital Nature Studies also incorporate the changing of the
seasons as they relate to flora, fauna, the seasonal constellations, and more.
Our hope is that with each succeeding year you and your students will recognize
with pleasure what you noticed the year before, and then add (from each the of
Five in a Row seasonal studies) additional information for that year. By the time
your children are in the upper grades, they should be very familiar with nature
and its repeating cycles. Botany, biology, astronomy, etc., will gain a strong foundation of experience and observation for these students.
Today's culture has made us an "inside" people--people without the knowledge of nature that was fundamentally common to those of generations past. It is important, probably more important that we know, to regain an understanding and appreciation of the natural world around us...to enjoy seeing the seasons change and to know that they will continue to do so. Even those who live in areas where the changes are more subtle, will learn to observe the less obvious changes. They will come to understand the areas in which they live through these studies, as well as learn how places other than their own find the seasons changing.
Let's regain some ground that has been lost, and find new ways to enjoy the beauty and wonder that has been set so richly before us. Let's explore the Five in a Row Digital Nature Studies, and refer to them again and again through the years. |
